How to get rid of the 5B00 error message on canon printers

As we all know, error messages are very common in canon printers in general, and especially now that continuous ink systems are being installed in them all the time. These systems tend to push our printers to their very limits.

Installing a CISS on any printer makes it work much more than it was made to, since their ink cartridges produce way more pages that they were made to print. If your cartridges were made, for example, for printing 200 sheets, a CISS will make it excede this quantity.

Occasionally, continuous ink systems can cause small ink spills inside our printers, which can fill up the ink pads in it and create this error message. The 5B00 error code appears on our canon printers once the inkpad absorber has filled up with ink.

This post may look very similar to the one we have on full waste ink pads, but this one has all the proper solutions for the 5B00 error message on canon printers and has nothing to do with that last post.

What’s causing the problem:

As more and more ink spills take place on your ink cartridges, due to proper ink cartridge or continuous ink system installation, the 5B00 error message will be more likely to appear on your canon printer.

If you’ve installed one of these ink systems on your printer, we recommend you read our post regarding ink spills in canon CISS printers.

Possible solutions to this problem:

These solutions will require a bit of patience and a lot of reading.
Please remember that you can contact us by leaving a comment in the section below this post if anything goes wrong with any of these answers. We will help you figure every little problem out and accompany you through the entire process.

Procedures to solve the 5B00 error message on canon printers:

First procedure:
This first tutorial will show you how to set your printer back to its original factory settings, so you won’t be working on the ink pad problems directly but on the printer as a whole. This restoring procedure will act on all the issues that may be found in your particular canon printer model, including this full ink pad situation.

You will need to turn your printer off and key it this way, unless we tell you the opposite. Mainly, you’ll be working with the stop/reset button on it to execute this solution.

This first procedure is mostly used on regular, non-multifunction printers. However, the buttons referred to in this post can be found on both printer types, with or without Inkjet systems. After you’ve completed this restoring method, your printer’s name will now have the words “copy 1” attached to it in your computer. If you want to learn how to install a default printer on your computer, please read this post.

Step #1:
First, turn your canon printer off.

Step #2:
Now, press and hold  the stop/reset button down. It should look like this on your printer:

Step #3:
While holding the stop/reset down, press the on/off button on the printer. This will turn the printer on and off again.

Step #4:
Let go of the stop/reset button and press it again two (2) times in a row, with light, tapping motions. Please remember to keep the on/off button pressed while doing this.

Step #5:
Let go of all the keys you were pressing down and wait until rest appears on your screen.

Step #6:
Touch the stop/reset button again for five (5) more consecutive times and, finally, press the on/off button two (2)  times very quickly.

Second procedure:

This particular tutorial works best on multifunction printers. We will get our printers to run on service mode so we can work on the problem itself, and make our printer think the ink absorber pad is empty instead of full. If you can open your printer up and clean this ink deposit, please do it because it qill be some ink in it.

You can get it clean by just laying a napkin on it and leaving it for a while, so it absorbs as much ink as it can and clear the deposit a bit.

Step #1:
First of all, turn your canon multifunction printer on. We will be working with our printer on throughout this entire procedure because we’ll be working directly on the printer’s settings.

Step #2:
Then, press the menu button on the printer.

Step #3:
You must now put your canon printer in service mode. In order to do this, you will have to press the SCAN, COPY and SCAN buttons in that exact order. Please take into account the service mode menu is entirely in English, just as a computer’s BIOS.

Step #4:
You can now press the + key until you’ve reached the COUNTER ACCESS option. Press the OK button once you’re there.

Step #5:
A page counter will now appear on your printer’s screen. The number on it indicates the amount of pages you’re printed in total. It’s a lot, huh?

Step #6:
Press the OK key.

Step #7:
Now, press the COPY button.

Step #8:
Use the - key to lower this score all the way to zero (0). Now, press OK.

Step #9:
continue to use the + symbol to look around the menu and stop once you get to SCAN PAGE COUNT. Set this counter back to zero (0) in order to wipe the score on the page counter on our canon printer, found only when it’s in service mode.

Step #10:
Browse the entire menu slowly until you reach the ABS-M DONT COUNT option. Set this score back to zero (0) and click OK.

Step #11:
Press the stop/reset button after everything else has been down.

Step #12:
Turn your printer off and back again using the on/off button on it.

If the INVALID KEY message appears on your computer screen at the end of this procedure, disconnect the power cable from the printer and connect it once more.

Third procedure:
This third and final procedure will also solve this problem for you, but it will work directly on your printer’s systems, which is now saying the ink absorber pad is full. In order to do this, you will need to install a restoring program that will help you deal with the printer’s internal processes; this program will do all the necessary configurations on your computer. If you connect this printer to another computer, the 5B00 error code may reappear.

You will also need to have an extracting software that allows you to reach the files in the zipped folders. Please click here to download Winrar.

Step #1:
First of all, please download the 5B00 error restoring program for canon printers from the following link. Save the program’s folder somewhere you can reach them easily and extract the files in it. You can now put your canon printer in service mode by following the next steps.

Step #2:
Turn your printer off. This time you won’t need to disconnect the power cable from your canon printer.

Step #3:
Now, press and hold the stop/reset and hit the on/off one.

Step #4:
Hold the on/off button down and let go of the stop/reset one.

Step #5:
Press the stop/reset button on your printer five (5) times in a row, while keeping the on/off button pressed down. Release both keys once this has been done.

Step #6:
Your printer will now be in fully operational service mode.

Step #7:
Locate the file you just downloaded and extract it from the zipped folder.

Step #8:
Once you’ve done this, please open the extracted folder and double-click on the SERVICETOLL.EXE file.

Step #9:
Now, click on the reload Button and connect your printer to another USB port. This will make all the configurations set on the last printer to stop working.

We recommend you rename your new default printer and attach the words “copy 1” to the very end of the old name. If you wish to learn how to set a default printer up in your computer, please read this post.

Step #10:
Put some blank sheets inside the paper tray and press the main button on your printer. Wait until the ERROR 001 message appears on screen, and hit OK.

Step #11:
Finally, turn the printer off by using the on/off button on it. You may need to press it twice in order to get this done. This method is now over, and everything should be solved by now.

We will not be held accountable for any damage you may cause your printer by following the tutorials in our blog. However, if you need more help with these cases, please contact us by leaving a comment in the section below this post.
