How to refill HP 22 tricolor ink cartridges

This HP 22 Tricolor ink cartridge is one of the best products ever made by HP, due to its high yield and the material they’re made of. These cartridges have a higher resistance than most current ones; modern ink cartridges tend to be measured with the same criteria. We also recommend you keep any printer that uses this ink cartridge until the very end. You can replace it once it’s incapable of printing again.

This ink cartridge yields up to 165 pages, an amount that can go down to 120 pages after it’s been refilled. This will stay this way as long as you follow this tutorial strictly.

Instructions to refill an HP 22 Tricolor ink cartridge:

Before starting the refill process, we recommend you clean the contacts on this ink cartridge. While this is necessary, it’s not really mandatory since these ink cartridges are known to have very high page yield. However, if you haven’t used them in a while, there may be some dried ink lying on the print heads. In this case, we recommend you read our post How to clean my print heads.

After this cleaning process has been done, again, a necessary but voluntary procedure, we’ll proceed to refilling our ink cartridges. Please remember to clean your cartridge’s print heads after they’ve been refilled three (3) times.

Step #1:
Place the cartridge on a surface that can take an ink spill or two. We recommend you stay away from white materials, since the ink will probably stay on them. This is why we suggest you use any black material, or even a flat surface where you can remove ink stains easily.

Step #2:
You can now remove the label located on the top of the ink cartridge; it will hold the ink cartridge’s number. We always recommend you remove the entire label before refilling your ink cartridge, since this label lets the necessary amount of ink enter the ink cartridge. This airflow aids your print quality and page yield, helping your printer reach the highest standards. Remove this label very slowly and keep it from harm.

Step #3:
Fill a syringe with 5ml of colored ink. Do not exceed this amount to avoid damaging your cartridge by surpassing the amount of ink it was made to hold. Adding more ink than necessary to an ink cartridge can jeopardize it.

Step #4:
Very carefully, place the labels back on the ink cartridges. Try and put these back as well as possible to allow a certain amount of air to enter the cartridge; this air will flow thorugh the canals inside the cartridge and make the ink drop.

Step #5:
Place the cartridge back in the printer and have the printer clean them. This will put them in the right stop. Take into account you’ll only reach ultimate print quality once you’ve printed about eight (8) pages using these ink cartridges. You could also print a color test sheet if you want to.

Cleaning Brother MFC head print

In order to maintain a good print quality, the machine will automatically clean the printhead as many times as necessary.

You can complete the cleaning process manually if there is a problem with the print quality, such as horizontal lines on the text, blank pages or discolored prints. You can clean the color Black on its own, three colors (Cyan/Yellow/Magenta) individually or all four colors at once.

Note:
Cleaning the head print consumes ink. Constant cleaning will use ink up unnecessarily.
If your Brother machine has a touch screen, please follow the steps detailed below:

1. Follow one of the steps below: 

- If your Brother machine has a button named INK on its control panel, press it.
- In the opposite case,
a. Press the MENU button.
b. Press the navigation arrow upwards or downwards in order to select INK.
c. Press the OK button.

2. Press the navigation arrow upwards or downwards in order to select CLEANING.

1. Press the OK button.
2. Press the navigation arrow upwards or downwards in order to select BLACK, COLOR or ALL, depending on what you wish to clean.
3. Press the OK button. 

For models with a touch screen: 

1. Press  or  (INK INDICATOR).
2. Press CLEANING.
3. Select BLACK, COLOR or ALL, depending on what you wish to clean.

The machine will clean the head print. Once the cleaning is done, the machine will on “Ready” mode automatically. If you’re experiment print quality problems, we recommend you repeat the head print cleaning process for each color showing the problem, at least four (4) times.

If you’re experiencing print quality problems and you want to see if the cleaning is improving it, print a Print Quality Check Sheet (PQCS) after the first cleanse, and then print another PQCS after repeating each step of the head print cleanse at least three (3) or more times (4 cleanses in total). You can then compare both PQSC’s.

Follow the next steps to print a Print Quality Check Sheet (PQSC)*:
*If your Brother machine has a touch screen, please follow the steps in “For models with a touch screen.”

1. Follow one of the steps below: 

- If your Brother machine has a button named INK on its control panel, press it.
- In the opposite case,
a. Press the MENU button.
b. Press the navigation arrow upwards or downwards in order to select INK.
c. Press the OK button.

2. Press the navigation arrow upwards or downwards in order to select TEST PRINT.
3. Press the OK button.
4. Press the navigation arrow upwards or downwards in order to select PRINT QUALITY.
5. Press the OK button.
6. Press the COLOR START button.

For models with a touch screen: 

1. Press  or  (INK INDICATOR).
2. Press TEST PRINT.
3. Press PRINT QUALITY.
4. Press the COLOR START button.

I’m putting my refilled cartridges back in the printer and the On/Off button keeps blinking

This post deals with a frequent issue that appears when we refill cartridges, put them back in the printers and the On/Off button blinks.

This is a very common scenario and, regrettably, bad news. This happening means the printer has stopped recognizing the cartridges, and that only happens when the ink cartridge is damaged.

But the truth is that, if the On/Off button blinks, either the print cartridge contacts or the printer connectors are dirty.

Cleaning the printer or the print cartridge connectors:

1. The solution to this small problem with the dirty connectors is to clean them, whether they’re the printer connectors or the print cartridge ones. We recommend you clean them with wet paper napkins or toilet paper. With this, all you’re doing is allowing the contacts to finish their own work, and the ink cartridges to finish the pending process of transmitting the heat from the printer towards them.

In case this first process doesn’t work:

1. Unfortunately, there is no alternate solution in this case. It seems the ink cartridge has been completely worn out. The only possible fix is replacing the damaged cartridge for another one, whether you use a new one or a used cartridge. This damage occurs when the ink cartridges aren’t able to heat the glycerin in the ink in order to make it expand throughout the sheet of paper. When the printer starts heating the head prints up and the ink cartridges are empty, the heat burns them and the circuits are damaged in the process. This is what causes the On/Off button to blink.

How to clean ink cartridges

One of the main reasons we chose to refill our ink cartridges is for the high cost of these ink cartridges. It is hard to understand why would an ink cartridge cost so much when is so cheap to manufacture. But, it doesn't matter, things are the way they are today and is up to us as consumers to max out our ink cartridges by refilling them as many times as possible and by taking good care them. 

To ensure the maximum durability of an ink cartridge, the cartridge must be in optimal conditions by cleaning it well, knowing when to refill it, and when to apply the right amount of ink among other key factors. 

Through this post we will learn step by step, the most effective way to clean an ink cartridge so it can increase its performance and longevity saving us money on ink and helping us to keep our printer a while longer. 

To start off, we will need some ingredients that can be found in our household. Please, bare in mind, this post is not about how to open an ink cartridge, but how to clean it. The steps shown in this post can be applied when the ink cartridge is fill with ink's residue or when the light on the printer is flickering; indicating that the connectors need to be clean soon; and finally, when the printer is printing blurry.

We'll need:

• Warm water
• A piece of smooth cloth or napkin
• Small cotton swab (not necessarily mandatory)

Instructions on how to clean an ink cartridge:

Step 1.
Before anything, we must identify what type of ink cartridge we are dealing with so we may know if they have print heads or not. Some cartridges have the print heads inside the cartridge itself, others have the print heads separate from the cartridges. Just in case you are not sure where exactly your cartridge's print head is, consult your owner's printer manual or the printer's manufacturer support web page. Therefore, to help you find out where your cartridge's print head is and which part needs to be clean.

Step 2.
Before we begin, it is recommended that we perform a print head cleaning that comes with the printer by default. The instructions related to this procedure can be found in the printer's owner manual or on the web. Moreover, you can find more information on the front side of most printers.
After confirming that the print head has been cleaned using the default tool, but you still do not see any changes in printing quality; we recommend to turn off the printer. Once the printer is off, open the printer's cover to access the cartridge. When the cartridge holder stops in the middle of rail, proceed to remove the cartridge from the cartridge's holder so you may be able to clean the connectors on the cartridge's holder.

Step 3.
Now we will clean the cartridges or the the print heads by submerging them into warm water. Remember, the water must be warm; but not too hot to avoid damaging the print head's plastic attachment. It has been proven that using warm water to clean off any ink residue from the ink cartridge is the best method so far, please be careful not to heat the water too much. 

Step 4.
Our next step is to remove the cartridges from the warm water and clean the print head with a soft piece of cloth or a very smooth napkin which can be dispose off after each use. Please bare in mind that if the cartridge has some left over ink, it may damage any part we may need in the near future. We need to clean the both the cartridges and print heads' connectors carefully in case they are dirty so everything may work well.
If the print head is inside the printer, we may remove the print heads to have them cleaned, but making sure that he print heads ' connectors are not dirty; if they are, clean them. Be very careful not to touch the print head's connectors with your fingertips when you are cleaning them because any foreign particle that comes in contact with the connectors could make printing impossible.

Step 5.
Finally, make sure the cartridges are clean so we can print several test pages to compare the printing quality after the cleaning process the cartridges and print heads went through. The test can be done from either the printer's control panel or from the desktop.

The steps are very simple and there’s no need to procrastinate because what the cartridges do when blocked is that they absorb the ink at the bottom of the outlet pipes, remember that so much water leaks into the stone until it is damaged.

Before beginning this step it is best that you look at this as well cleaning the ink cartridges, these procedures can help you find the quickest possible solution to your problem.

Follow the steps below:

1. Put the cartridge in some water not cold nor hot i.e. steam boiled water.
2. Please note that the cartridges cannot under any circumstances exceed the limit of connectors i.e. water cannot clog up the connectors on the front of the cartridge.
3. Leave the cartridge approximately 20 minutes until the water vapor penetrates the head .
4. Then proceed to remove the cartridge from the water without cleaning the part that was in the water, shake the cartridge therefore allowing the water and the ink, which is now soft, to come out of the ink cartridge .
5. After doing this, if we see that the cartridge still has the same problem, we do it again , we recommend changing the water  again , this way we can see how much ink can come out of the ink cartridge.

How to identify the colors of an ink cartridge for refilling

This is a very common question when filling a cartridge, it is important to know that the information that the cartridges have on the label in relation to where the color are is not indicative of the actual colors.

At the top of the cartridges there are colors that may indicate where that particular color ink is, but not always. An effective way to find out where the cartridge’s colors are is very simple and you do not have to damage the cartridge at all.

Before refilling a cartridge, check if you are using the correct ink and check if it is necessary to clean the ink cartridge .

All you have to do is just get some white paper napkins or toilet paper, put the cartridge head i.e. where these colors come out and the colors are already marked there for you.
