The HP 84 black ink cartridge uses about 69ml of ink, while the colored ones use 89ml. This is the same amount of ink you must inject into them when you’re refilling them. They are compatible with the following printer models: HP designjet 10ps, 20ps, 50ps, 30, 90, 120 and 130. Unfortunately, these printers are no longer available for purchase. If you already have one of these models, refilling the cartridges is a very good option with them.

2. Get your hands on a piece of fabric, preferably black, for any ink spills that may happen. You could also use a flat surface that’s easy to clean.
3. Take a good look at the ink colors to avoid injecting the wrong color to your cartridge. This could terminate your cartridge, since ink color damages are very hard to fix.
Step #1:
Place the cartridge on the piece of black fabric we mentioned earlier, or on top of the flat, easy-to-clean surface before getting the refill procedure started.
Step #2:
This cartridge, as well as all the other cartridges that have this kind of print heads, are refilled by removing the bottom part of them. This will expose the cartridge’s injector, its pump and the exact location where you must refill it. Please take a look at the following image to learn how to remove the bottom part of the cartridge.
You must make the cut exactly where the red line appears on the cartridge. This will divide the cartridge in two and show you everything that’s on the bottom part of it.
Step #3:
After removing the label from the printer, it should look like the one in the following picture and show all the parts we mentioned earlier. For this step, you will need an empty syringe, which you’ll use to extract a small, black rubber ball marked with #1 on the picture.
Please do this as slowly and carefully as possible, and try to avoid pushing the rubber ball into the cartridge. Once you extract it, make sure you have it and don’t lose it.
Step #4:
You may now fill the syringe with the proper amount of ink. If you’re using a regular ink cartridge, fill the syringe with 69ml of ink. If, on the contrary, you’re using an extra large one, you must apply 84ml of ink.
Please take into account we recommend you never refill an ink cartridge with a puncturing syringe. Inside these cartridges, there’s a thin metal sheet that is as frail as parchment paper. If you pierce it with the syringe, you may damage it and leave a permanent ink spill in your cartridge. This is why we recommend you only insert the tip of the syringe into the cartridge to avoid piercing it altogether.
Step #5:
After all this procedure is done, put the small rubber ball back on the cartridge, which acts as a plug that keeps the ink from leaving the cartridge. Please do this very carefully to avoid pushing the small ball into the cartridge, since they’re very hard to find and you probably wouldn’t be able to take it out of the cartridge without damaging it.
After putting the small ball back on the cartridge, leave it with this orifice facing downwards, In this way, you can make sure everything came out well and that there isn’t any ink leaking from the cartridge, both from the injection site and the place you just sealed with the rubber ball.
Step #6:
Put the bottom lid back on the cartridge, and leave it with the lid facing downwards just to check fo there’s any problems or ink spills going on. If you’ve followed every step exactly as we’ve described them in this post, then your cartridge should be working perfectly.
