Instructions for refilling the HP 61 black ink cartridge:

Before we start, we recommend you clean the contacts on this cartridge. Keep in mind this is only necessary, not mandatory, since these cartridge have very good outcome. However, if you haven’t used the cartridge in a long time, there could be some dried ink on the print heads, which is never good. If you wish to learn how to do this, please visit the following post.

Step #1:
First, place the cartridge on a surface that can take an ink spill or two. We don’t recommend you use any white materials, since you won’t be able to remove the ink from it, but a dark or black material itself, even a flat surface you can easily remove all the ink from.

Step #2:
Now you may proceed to removing the label on top the cartridge, which contains the cartridge number. We always recommend you remove this label before refilling the cartridge, since it’s in charge of letting the necessary amount of air into the cartridge. This will allow it to reach its maximum printing quality and the page yield it was made for. Take the label off slowly in order to avoid damaging it.

Step #3:
You must now inject the 5ml of ink very slowly. We need you to do this as slowly as possible to help the ink spread inside the cartridge in the best way possible, and to soak the sponge in it with ink. Please take a look at the following image, and remember to take all the air out of the syringe.

Step #4:
Now that you’ve refilled the ink cartridge, all you need to do is print a test sheet with it. We recommend you leave the cartridge inside the printer from now on.
